EXPERTISE IN SKIN RADIANCE
For more than 30 years, CHANEL Research has been studying cohorts of women in Asia, Europe, the United States, and more recently, Africa. As a result of this large-scale approach, we can confirm that radiance is a major skincare concern for people all around the world, regardless of age or skin tone. Women spontaneously mention having issues with dull skin and uneven complexions-which are key factors in the pursuit of radiance.
Over the last 30 years, CHANEL Research has explored the diverse range of clinical signs related to loss of radiance and acquired in-depth knowledge about skin quality in women of all ages and skin tones. It has also studied the various factors that influence how well light reflects off the skin’s surface. We now have a database that includes more than 7,000 women and 1,100 men, compiling information from studies conducted all over the world, including in South Africa, China, South Korea, India, the United States, and most recently, Senegal. By performing clinical, photographic, and biophysical analyses, as well as evaluating lifestyle and environmental conditions, we have been able to gather more than 4 million data points that provide us with information about the signs of aging and any differences between these populations, in order to pinpoint exactly what makes skin radiant.
UNDERSTANDING RADIANCE
Radiance, which is seen as a major and universal skincare concern, is the sum of two factors: skin texture and color, which can be affected by age, lifestyle, and environmental conditions. According to CHANEL Research, radiance is achieved when light reflects harmoniously off the skin. This depends on two key factors:
– Skin tone evenness: skin is flawless, with no dark spots, color irregularities, redness, or loss of pigmentation.
– Skin texture evenness: skin is plump and smooth, with perfectly balanced moisture and lipid levels. Pores are barely visible. All of these elements play an important role in improving how light interacts with the skin.
CHANEL Research has made it its mission to not only revive skin’s radiance, but also to preventively address clinical signs related to loss of radiance in order to delay their appearance and reduce their severity. Predicting how skin quality will change is not an easy discipline, but CHANEL now has new tools that provide access to preventive information.
PREVENTING THE APPEARANCE OF DARK SPOTS
We used a bioprinted, reconstructed skin model, the first time this technology has been applied to the cosmetic industry, that makes it possible to observe the preventive effects of a product firsthand, providing proof of its efficacy prior to the appearance of clinical signs-particularly the appearance of dark spots, which considerably affect skin tone evenness and therefore radiance.
This achievement is the result of a partnership between CHANEL Research and LabSkin Creations, a French start-up specializing in skin tissue engineering. These reconstructed skin models, developed using bioprinting technology, allowed us to replicate the morphological complexity of dark spots within the three-dimensional structure of the skin tissue.
This key innovation enabled us to study the appearance of dark spots and assess how effective our ingredients and skincare products are at preventing and correcting them.
Thanks to this first for the cosmetic industry, we can confidently assert that the ÉCLAT PREMIER skincare ritual has a powerful preventive and corrective effect when it comes to radiance, accompanying women in their pursuit of beauty, day after day.

After more than 30 years of clinical studies, CHANEL has developed the ÉCLAT PREMIER ritual, designed to preserve and revive skin’s first radiance. At the heart of the ritual, the Bright Milky Essence prevents the appearance of dark spots. It has been proven to be effective by CHANEL Science who, in partnership with LabSkin, devised a pioneering test method using a 3D bioprinted skin model. A world first for the cosmetic industry.

CHANEL Science has concentrated the power of ylang-ylang, or « premier flower*, » within a powerful extract. Harvested by hand at the CHANEL open-sky laboratory in Madagascar, this pioneer plant possesses extraordinary properties, including the ability of its extract to preserve the complexion’s radiance. In the skincare line, complementary niacinamide provides a targeted, corrective effect on dark spots; in the makeup collection, it works to reveal the complexion’s radiance. The complexion is even, and skin is radiant.
