CHANEL & CINEMA – TOKYO LIGHTS

In keeping with its commitment to cinematic creation, CHANEL is proud to announce the launch of the CHANEL & CINEMA – TOKYO LIGHTS programme.

Under the aegis of filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda – a major figure in Japanese cinema, awarded several Japan Academy Film Prizes, Asian Film Awards, a César, and winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for his film Shoplifters – this unique programme aims to support the emergence of a new generation of Japanese filmmakers.

“I was looking for a collaborative partner to nurture the young talents in the film industry for the next ten or twenty years. We are working collaboratively with CHANEL on a programme to offer a space for new encounters. This project will be very exciting,” says Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Encouraging the creativity, audacity and freedom of young directors – heirs to an internationally renowned cinematic tradition – this programme offers a platform for expression and access to a network of professionals in the Japanese film industry.

Born around the same time as cinema, Gabrielle Chanel was a close ally to great directors who marked the history of the discipline. She designed film costumes, first in Hollywood and then in Paris, where the modernity of her creations reflected the zeitgeist and accompanied the emergence of the French

New Wave and its directors. Today CHANEL continues adhering to the pioneering vision and commitment of its founder, by creating costumes for films and collaborating with the world’s most renowned auteurs, institutions and festivals. With the utmost respect for the filmmakers’ artistic gesture, CHANEL enables the absolute freedom and singularity of each project.

Through this long-term project, the House reaffirms its desire to nurture boundless creation all while contributing to the development of both a Japanese and global artistic community.
